There are 13 golf courses within easy reach of El Higueron. Being located on the eastern side of Fuengirola and so close to Malaga and Benalmadena makes it a perfect chance to enjoy some of the finest golf close to Malaga.
Torrequebrada Golf
Rich in history and highly respected, Torrequebrada Golf is an old school championship venue. The greatest players in the world have walked these fairways, Ballesteros, Olazabal, Langer, Faldo and more.
Torrequebrada Golf has matured wonderfully, the grounds and gardens have a sub tropical feel and make the most beautiful setting for the golf course.
Torrequebrada Golf is a technical golf course. The fairways are kind and wide, however the greens are difficult to hit. On several of the par four holes you might need to ask yourself if the driver is the right choice. It is a golf course that demands strategy and focus. The rewards are huge. To build a decent score on this historically important golf course is deeply satisfying.
Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf
A members club with Royal insignia in the suburbs of Malaga. This is a delightful golf course, a mixture of parkland and sea views, magnificent Palm trees and Pines. The golf course is a joy to play, like Torrequebrada it is always in pristine condition and brings a positive golfing experience to elite and novice players alike.
The clubhouse is a century old cortijo with a fabulous atrium courtyard which makes the perfect place for a post golf drink and lunch.
Parador del Golf, Málaga
Approaching its centenary, Parador del Golf is a great example of a links course. Over the last 100 years nature has sculpted and buffed this course into the gem we have today. The paying surfaces are well manicured, fairways and greens of a very high standard. The rough is as nature created it, salt bleached trees twisted by the wind into tortured statues occupy the zones where a golf ball should never go. If you love golf then you will get huge pleasure from playing this variable layout.
Mijas Golf
From the El Higueron Hotel travelling 12 minutes in the other direction brings Mijas Golf and Santana Golf course into play.
Mijas Golf is recognised as being amongst the best golf facilities in Europe. Home to 36 holes designed by Robert Trent Jones back in the ‘70s the Los Lagos and Los Olivos are both championship worthy golf courses of the highest quality.
Los Lagos is 7200 yards from the back tees and is a leviathan. When played from the tee appropriate to your swing speed you will have a golf experience that simply cannot be bettered. Both Los Lagos and Los Olivos are walkable, which for me, adds hugely to the positive experience.
Los Olivos is a little shorter than Los Lagos, The fairways are more slender and the greens elevated. All of which make Los Olivos a totally different challenge to its big brother. Fairways lined with Olive trees that give the course its name make accuracy desirable. Great short game skills will be needed to keep things tidy around the greens. The golf courses at Mijas golf are two of the best golf courses in Fuengirola and indeed the Costa del Sol.
Santana Golf
Santana Golf is another creation penned by former Trant Jones designer, Cabell Robinson. Santana Golf is wildly popular with visiting golfers because of its superb condition and playability.
Sanatan Golf is utterly charming, set within a former avocado farm; you will be well advised to keep the ball within the generous fairways. I can tell you from experience that avocado trees are not 80% air!
