The city of Malaga is not always the first thought for many when planning a golf trip to the Costa del Sol. The Malaga golf courses are diverse, with seaside courses, sub tropical parkland and high altitude mountain courses the choice is tremendous.
In this article we will share with you our insights into 7 golf courses that are close to Malaga city.
What does Malaga have to offer?
Malaga is a beautiful city. Ancient, dating back to the 7th Century BC, Malaga has been an important city for quite literally more than a millenia!
Walking in modern Malaga is like walking in an open air museum where all of the artifacts surround you and make up daily life. With its abundance of Phoenician, Roman, Moorish and Christian influences Malaga City is probably the most unusual and fascinating city in Europe.
With 3 distinct areas of interest, the city centre, the old town and the famous port, Malaga never ceases to enthral and entertain. Guests are rewarded with a city shining bright with culture from across the ages.
Wining, dining and nightlife in this vibrant city is rather special too. There are more than 2100 restaurants, bars and cafes to sustain you. Malaga might not have the “showbiz” reputation of the other big golfing destinations on the Costa del Sol like Marbella, Mijas and Estepona, but rest assured, this is a great city to visit.

Designed by the great Spanish golfer Jose Maria Canizares and opened in 1990, Añoreta Golf Resort has matured gracefully over the years.
Beautifully mown fairways with broad verdant stripes make a most inviting view from the clubhouse. The Clubhouse restaurant is a place of wonderment too. The well stocked humidor and aged beef display case caught my eye!
Friendly and jovial staff make this a very positive experience. I enjoy every visit here.

Overview
The second appearance on this list for Jose Maria Canizares. The mountain golf course at Antequera Golf was opened in 2003 and is nothing less than spectacular. Positioned on the periphery of the El Torcal Nature reserve, Antequerra Golf can claim a location that just cannot be beaten for its beauty.
Incidentally, this golf course is tough, only Valderrama has a higher slope rating along the Costa del Sol. The cortijo style clubhouse has earned great reviews for its hospitality.
Nearby you will find the Hotel Magdalena, a five star converted convent. This wonderfully stylish and rustic hotel is worth a stop over if only to experience their Michelin star winning restaurant. I cannot think of a better way to complete your high altitude golfing experience in Malaga than a visit to this wonderful spot!

Overview
Baviera Golf is possibly the most popular of the Malaga golf courses with more than 30,000 rounds of golf played annually.
A hat-trick of design, this is the third course on the list designed by Canizares and in my opinion his most thoughtful layout. This golf course requires full attention. It is imperative to have a strategy and stick to it. Blasting away with the driver is not going to reward you! (I learned this first hand!)
On the day that we played I was heartened to see a busy junior section all practising in organised groups under the guidance of the club professionals. With forward thinking golf clubs like Baviera the future of our sport is good!
Baviera Golf has won many rave reviews, members say it is the best club they have ever belonged to, visitors remark on its condition and great value compared to courses close to Marbella, others comment on the amazing views, location and hospitality.
I had a great day here. I think you will too!

Overview
The original 18 hole parkland course is a favorite of John Walker. He describes it as having the best greens anywhere on the Costa del Sol, as being a golf course that demands thought and execution and a golf course that will reward disciplined shot making.
John also mentioned that “wild drivers of the golf ball would be made to suffer”, that bit I can attest to! I suffered!
All 27 holes here are set in lovely grounds. Lovely homes and holiday apartments adjoin some of the holes before the course heads into the Malaga hinterland. The clubhouse is a wonderful Cortijo with a great internal terrace. Perfect for a cold beer in the summer or a cafe carajillo in the winter!
Lauro Golf is enormously popular with local Malaguenos and visitors from across Europe. They love the intricacies of the 27 hole layout and tremendous apres golf provided by the clubhouse.

Overview
Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf is a gem. Perhaps the best all round facility of all of the golf courses in Malaga. It has everything!
The first thing that I saw which I really liked was a strong contingent of junior golfers. Clearly Guadalhorce Golf is investing in the future of our sport. The practise facilities are comprehensive with the wonderful IH Golf Academy on hand to offer coaching and club fitting.
The rolling fairways are gently sculpted, mainly flat and therefore walkable. The condition is astounding. The greens are beautiful and the layout is simply one of the best designs anywhere. It is not surprising to learn that the designer is none other than Malaga’s famous golfing son and Guadalhorce member Miguel Angel Jiminez!
The quality of the golf course is matched by the quality and ambience of the clubhouse. The rustic cortijo is a wonderful place to enjoy a coffee, beer, tapas or fabulous Mediterranean food.
I cannot overstress how good Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf is! Come and see for yourself!

Par 3 Course
Overview
Opened in 1925 Parador de Golf Malaga is the oldest of the golf Courses in Malaga. The par 5 first hole and 12th are both great birdie chances if your tee shot is good enough. The par 3 ninth hole has broken my heart several times. Such a good hole!
Nine of the holes run along the beach and nine holes are parkland. The greens are always quick and the fairways, in theory at least, not too difficult to hit. Miss the fairway and you will find yourself in proper old fashioned seaside rough that will test your shot making ability to the max!
Real Club de Campo Malaga has an enviable tournament history having hosted many European Tour events over the years. This is a good golf course that plays very differently according to season, exactly as traditional links courses should be! If you are a golf aficionado then you will appreciate Parador de Malaga Golf Club.

Overview
This is a very special place. The mature sub tropical gardens, the rolling terrain and its rich heritage bring a sense of occasion each time you tee up the golf ball.
The golf course is one of the great courses that the Costa del Sol has to offer and it is always in immaculate condition. Greenkeepers are unobtrusively working on the golf course constantly to keep it at the pinnacle of condition.
The management and hospitality team are entirely focussed on delivering to you the best possible experience.
This is a championship golf course which requires skill and strategy. I have never been able to beat my handicap here, but I always walk off the 18th green feeling exhilarated. There is something unquantifiable about playing golf at Torrequebrada which makes it deeply fulfilling.
Put this course on your bucket list!
