Fantastic news this week for Golf on the Costa del Sol. Another major tournament will be hosted here in Europe’s new Home of Golf! Finca Cortesin have been given the honor of hosting the 2023 Solheim Cup. Dates are yet to be confirmed.
The Solheim Cup is the biggest event in women’s golf and is widely considered to carry Major status alongside The Ryder Cup and The Presidents Cup.
Background
Founded by Karsten Solheim, the man behind PING, the first edition was played in 1990. With a similar team selection process to that of the Ryder Cup the superstars of womens golf have done battle biannually over the last 30 years. The score currently stands at 10 matches to 6 in favor of the American team. There is every indication that the momentum is about to change.
Ladies European Tour
The depth of young talent emerging from Europe is fantastic with players like Charley Hull and Georgie Hall in the ascendancy. Spain’s Carlota Ciganda is enjoying a breakout year looking every inch like the next European talisman in the mould of her famous compatriots, Jimenez, Olazabal and Ballesteros!
Why Spain is ideal
Spain has hosted more than 70 Ladies European Tour and development tour events. There have been many European Men’s events held on the Costa del Sol, the highlight being the 1997 Ryder Cup at Valderra. Spain and in particular the Costa del Sol has the infrastructure, the climate and the passion to make this event very special indeed.
Ladies European Tour chief executive Alexandra Armas added: “Spain is a passionate golfing nation with knowledgeable fans and a history of developing generations of talented golfers while Andalusia’s strong cultural heritage will make for a unique experience for players, guests and supporters alike.
“We are delighted to announce Spain as the host nation for the 2023 Solheim Cup when it returns to European soil.”
